Fauna Theme - Echidna

The reverse of each coin depicts a short-beaked Echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus). This shy and mysterious creature is one of just three species of monotremes, or egg-laying mammals. Heavily armoured with sharp spines for protection, Echidnas are widely distributed throughout Australia, feeding on a preferred diet of termites, which they catch with their long, sticky tongues. The year-date and The Perth Mint's traditional ‘P’ mintmark also appear in the design.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coins depict Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
