As gemstone wholesalers we at www.gemrockauctions.com offer a wide range of Gemstones, loose gemstones and other high quality products, Including Peridot,
mined in antiquity on the Egyptian island of St. John, in the Red Sea. It is a golden-green variety of a mineral called olivine, and includes hues from leek-green to yellow-green. Conceptions of the origin of the word is perhaps from the French word peritot meaning unclear, possibly from the inclusions and cloudy character of large stones.
Or from the Arabic word faridat, meaning gem. Regardless, peridot has been recognised around in ancient times, it has been mentioned in the Bible under the Hebrew name of pitdah. It is so ancient that it can be found in Egyptian jewellery from the early 2nd millennium B.C.
The stones used at that time came from a deposit on a small volcanic island in the Red Sea, some 45 miles off the Egyptian coast at Aswan, which was not rediscovered until about 1900. Quality peridot gems come from Arizona, Burma, Norway, Red Sea, Hawaii and sometimes in meteorites. Legend say peridot was one of the favourite gemstones of Cleopatra and that some of the emeralds worn by her were actually peridot. Because of its distinctive green colour, this gem has alternately been confused with emerald and chrysoberyl.
Peridot is the birthstone for August. Peridot is not particularly hard - only 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Composition is (Mg, Fe)2(SiO)4. Peridot is said to encourage an openness of solar plexus and allows for less tense situations. Physically it rids of toxins, stimulates complete tissue regeneration of the body and builds vibration remedies to work more effectively. Strengthens the spleen and the pancreas.
Emotionally it clears behaviour that is not conducive to the unfoldment of self. Lessens nervousness and balances and aligns the energy to heal the ego.
