The word topaz originated from the word Sanskrit, meaning fire. Egyptians believed the topaz was coloured from the golden glow of the might sun god Ra. The brilliance of this stone made the topaz a very powerful amulet that protected them against harm. Topaz occurs in a variety of colours, the two most valuable colours are a deep golden yellow topaz and pink topaz. Other colours for topaz occurs in red, orange, peach, pink, gold, yellow, brown and clear which are found in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Russia and Pakistan.
The most well-known topaz is the very large Braganza set in the 17th century Portuguese Crown, said to be 1,640 carats. It was first thought to be one of the largest diamond known to man, however it was later determined as a colourless topaz.
