Tanzanite was first introduced in 1967 and is found only in a relative small, approximately, five square mile area near

the Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania, East Africa. It is one of the newest and most exotically vivid coloured gemstone.

Tanzanite belongs in the Ziosite mineral species which are only found in East India. Tanzanite comes in various shades

of violet-blue. The less expensive colours range toward violet, a light purplish blue. The best and more expensive colours

are a rich deep blue with just a hint of violet. Legend says that the Masai cattle herders were first to become aware of this

stone, after a fire caused by lightning burned areas in Tanzania about 30 years ago. They realised that brown Ziosite crystal

turned into a deep blue-purple colour from the heat of the fire. Tanzanite is Pleochroic, a property that has the ability to exhibit

different colours when viewed in different axis. Such as blue, purple and bronze displayed in different directions, adding depths

to the colour. Tanzanite is the birthstone for December and is also the suggested gemstone for a 24th wedding anniversary.
