The name ‘Emerald’ comes from the old French word ‘esmeralde’, which was derived from the Greek word ‘smaragdos’ meaning ‘green stone’. The historical green color of emerald is unparalleled in the world of gemstones and it is considered as one of the most ‘precious four’ of all gemstones, which also includes sapphire, ruby and diamond. Most gem quality emerald found today is heavily included, rendering it risky to fashion into jewelry as breakage may occur. The finest emeralds come from Colombia, as this locale is known to have the very best color, showing a bluish-green in the finest specimens.
I bought this emerald rough from a very well known supplier who took the material in from one of his customers, the material was said to come from South America. However the country of origin is not known, this piece exhibits top color and perfect cutting. The inclusions seen in the photo are not visible to the naked eye, so this piece is easily rated eye clean and will make a perfect ringstone.
An AGL Gembrief will accompany this piece certifying that it is natural emerald without any sort of treatment.
