This is an untreated rough honey-orange chalcedony stone that comes from the river mouth of the Panama Canal. Probably they are coming out from the digging of the new Canal extension recently inaugurated. Or, from one of the adjacent rivers. This stone is also interesting from a geological perspective. Before the Canal extension, the estimated period of time when the Isthmus was formed was 3 million years ago. But when they dug the Canal extension they found many fossils and the Isthmus formation was recalculated to 15 million years ago. Not all scientists agree with this timeline and discussions are still ongoing. Aside from its geological, aesthetic and historical worth, this stone has an intrinsic value: you can cut out of it semiprecious gems. I collected several kilograms of this kind of stones in different honey-orange shades. They are hard and after a good polish they get an excellent shine. Clarity is acceptable. I checked their refractive index with my refractometer: R.I. falls in between 1.53 and 1.54. Therefore, some of these stones can be citrine, others carnelian or just chalcedony. All pictures are taken when stones are dry. Shipping is from Panama.
