Spinel is a beautiful gem that comes in a variety of colours, from purple, blue and violet to oranges, pinks and reds. In the past, red and blue spinels were mistaken for rubies and sapphires, respectively. The most famous case of mistaken identity is the “Black Prince’s Ruby”, worn by a succession of Moorish and Spanish kings throughout the 14th century, eventually ending up in England’s Imperial State Crown. This “ruby” is, in fact, a 170-carat spinel.
