Madan, in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, just north of the frontier with Greece, is an ancient ore-miners’ settlement. The history of mining in the Madan region extends back at least as far as the Thracians in the fifth century B.C. where the extraction of lead ore began.

A wonderful mixed species example from the Madan ore field in Bulgaria consisting of well formed black metallic tetrahedral Sphalerite crystals on one side, silvery Galena and amorphous Sphalerite on the bottom topped with well formed UV reactive Manganoan Calcite crystals which glow under long wave ultraviolet light (see pictures) a deligtful purple. Specimen is interesting under magnification, view the well formed tetrahedral Sphalerite crystals up close and enjoy viewing the well formed bladed Manganoan Calcite crystals which are sprinkled with micro Galena. Specimen requires magnification in order to fully enjoy the range of interesting structures and Galena inclusions on the Calcite.
