6.56ct natural unheated spinel from Tajikistan.
Certified officially a pink spinel by Lotus Gemology, there is a nice pink orange tinge for those who know how to see. Or if you have looked around on or offline for pink spinels, you will be able to tell better which are just pink or pink with orange.
This spinel was really hard to photograph, its colour not true when taken in a light box at all. Its colour is only true in natural daylight, which is why I’ve included many photos in the garden. The photos are not edited or filtered in any way.
When you move into the shade, the pink has a little more blue. When you move towards natural light, the pink has a little more yellow.
There is a nice hint of padparadscha colour, which is quite telling in the quality of this spinel.
Spinels come in all colours and there has been a recent surge of appreciation in this long undervalued gem. Perhaps it has got to do with the ridiculous price of rubies. Or if you know a little of the history of spinels, perhaps history has gone a full round – spinels used to be mistaken as rubies (ie. the Balas Ruby).
While they come in all colours, pink spinels that have that orangey or grapefruit hue are very desirable.
This spinel comes in a perfect package with its Lotus Report, which provides details about the colour and tone/saturation of a stone.
Lotus Gemology Report Number 9743-9740.
