ORIGIN : MADAN, BULGARIA
Madan, in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, just north of the frontier with Greece, is an ancient ore-miners’ settlement. The history of mining in the Madan region extends back at least as far as the Thracians in the fifth century B.C. where the extraction of lead ore began.
A fantastic example of the highly sought after Spinel law twin Galena with a wonderful silvery sub metallic luster from the Madan ore field in Bulgaria, which is noted for some unusual crystal habits of Galena, along with a well formed UV reactive Manganoan Calcite crystal which glows a delightful pinkish color under long wave ultraviolet light (see picture). Minor black Sphalerite also present. Specimen looks interesting under magnification as there are features to explore such as the wonderful geometric formations and spot the well formed tetrahedral micro Sphalerite crystal under the Calcite which exhibits delightful rainbow colors. Specimen will look great on display in your collection, it is truly captivating and collectible. Highest bidder will not be disappointed. Please note : Fluorescence is a phenomenon that causes a mineral to "glow" within the visible spectrum when exposed to ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light is a form of electromagnetic radiation invisible to the human eye. The ultraviolet reaction is only visible with a special fluorescent torch / lamp with a filter that blocks white light but allows ultraviolet light to pass through. In order to achieve satisfactory results, do not use inexpensive 'UV' lights. The UV longwave torch I use to take the photos with is a Convoy S2+ Nichia UV 365nm LED Flashlight with filter lens. Keep in mind that not only wattage, filtration but also distance from the UV torch to specimen are significant factors for best results. Use protective UV-absorbing goggles, for extended viewing.
