Azurite Druzy cabochon with Malachite
This cabochon is quite robust despite looking like it is damaged on the back. With all gemstones we need to take care and please do not put undue pressure on this.
This is a rare gemstone - particularly to find one of this quality. Druzy gemstones are tiny crystals of minerals that formed within or on the surface of another mineral. Azurite is a rare variety of gemstone quality copper ore. Azurite is one of two basic copper carbonate minerals (malachite is the other). Azurite is rarer than malachite and is considered more valuable as well. Azurite has the formula Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 Azurite is a deep blue copper mineral produced by weathering of copper ore deposits. It is also known as Chessylite after the type locality at Chessy-les-Mines near Lyon, France. The mineral, a carbonate, has been known since ancient times, and was mentioned in Pliny the Elder’s Natural History under the Greek name kuanos and the Latin name caeruleum. The blue of azurite is exceptionally deep and clear, and for that reason the mineral has tended to be associated since antiquity with the deep blue color of low-humidity desert and winter skies.
