History of Bisbee, Cochise Co, Arizona
*The ore deposits at Bisbee will always be remembered for their size and richness. Although not currently mined, they have hosted some of the most important mines in US history.
*However, Bisbee is actually more famous for its mineral specimens like this azurite, which forms large, blocky, bright blue crystals, and for grassy green botryoidal malachite which was the most common oxide zone ore mineral in the ore bodies.
*Azurite and malachite are the two minerals that often come to mind when collectors think of Bisbee. The mines in the area have produced some of the finest azurite in the world, sometimes even as large crystals up to 10cm!
No other mineral is more closely associated with the mines in Bisbee than azurite. From its beginning, this district has almost continuously produced fine specimens. At no time during the almost 100 years of mining was there a span of more than just a few years when azurite was not being mined. The array of forms, range of hues, and the wide variety of associations, combine to produce Bisbee’s most breathtaking masterpieces.
