Orthoceras, also known as Ortheceratites,have cone shaped
shells and are related to modern squid and cuttlefish.
Moroccan fossils are found in incredible hard black basalt
We visited an area where these fossils were prolific on the
ground. I was given a strong heavy metal pick to dig out some but after 6 hits
my pick had just bounced off.
Hardest black basalt rock I had ever seen, the pick just
bounced off and my hands were jarred.
You need heavy duty cutting equipment to dig these fossils
out and even in the cutters yard the dust was incredible when the guys were
polishing these fossils. Now I greatly appreciate how hard it is to dig these
This marine animal was an ancient mollusc that lived over
400 million years ago.
This is a squid like marine animal but fossils only contain
the outer shell of this animal.
The outer shell worked a similar process as ammonites in
that the air chambers would be filled with air or water for propulsion or the
lower or rise as the animal whisked while swimming in the ocean to catch its
prey as it had toothlike beak to tear its prey apart.
Most specimens are single animals but some
specimens have several and up to hundred specimens
