Kunzite is a very young gemstone, comparatively- it has only been known for a little more than a hundred years. In 1902, George Frederick Kunz, a gemstone specialist and New York jeweler, was the first person to give a comprehensive description of the stone. Kunzite had just been discovered in the Pala District of San Diego County, California. The new and beautiful gemstone was named "kunzite" after its discoverer, Mr. Kunz. Naming a gemstone after the person who discovered it is a common practice in the world of gemstones.
