Large specimen of Herkimer diamond on bedrock Dolostone
Source Herkimer county New York
Size 71 X 52 X39 MM
"Herkimer Diamonds" is the name given to the doubly terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer County, New York and surrounding areas.
The host rock for Herkimer Diamonds is the Cambrian-age, Little Falls Dolostone. The Little Falls Dolostone was deposited about 500 million years ago and the Herkimer Diamonds formed in cavities within the Dolostone. These cavities are frequently lined with Drussy quartz crystals and often are coated with a tarry hydrocarbon
With closer inspection, the stones do not appear to be solid lapis lazuli. The blue is only a thin coating across what stones are behind it.
