FINE AMBER CARVING
This is an exceptionally clear example of 30 million year old fossilized tree resin, beautiful honey-golden amber. As the resin seeps down the trunk of the tree it captures anything in its path, preserving the floral (and occasionally faunal) detritus forever. It is a rare piece that has no such inclusions, but a skilled artisan has capitalized on the remarkable and complete clarity of this piece to create a beautiful piece of natural history art; first cut and polished into a large cabochon, the amber has been flattened at the back, inset with numerous tiny leaves, and then reverse carved so that from the front one is presented with the tranquil scene of a deer grazing peacefully beneath a tree, A piece of Baltic amber that has a reverse carving of a flower.
