Tanzanite is the blue to violet purple version of the Mineral Zoisite. It is only found in one location on earth, Tanzania, Africa. It is one of the newest and most vivid gemstones to hit the market in recent years.
Here you will find many single stones that are suitable for setting straight into jewelry. Since it is a relatively soft gemstone, extra care needs to be taken when designing jewelry. It is not recommended to be made into something you will wear everyday, but it is perfect for a large cocktail ring.
When selecting a stone there are a few facotrs to take into account. The first factor is color. Stones that are vivid blue in color with no secondary hue such as violet are rare and the most expensive. Try to find a stone that has as much blue as possible for your budget. The most common stones are a beautiful violet color with slight flashes of blue. These stones are very affordable and look beautiful.
Cutting is also an important factor in Tanzanite. Some stones are cut very deep to try and increase the saturation of color. This can be a good thing because it makes the stone look more vivid in color, but it can be impracticable for setting in jewelry because of the depth.
Clarity is hugely important factor that will determine the price of the stone you choose. Tanzanite should be eye clean, meaning that no inclusions can be seen with the naked eye. In terms of clarity grading, this should be VS or higher. Eye visible inclusions in stones will greatly decrease the value.
It is safe to assume that all Tanzanite has been heat treated to improve the color. This is a perfectly fine treatment and is widely accepted. Stones are heated to approximately 600 degrees Celsius which will remove most of the green and yellow hues from the stone and increase the blue and purple. Without heat treatment, 99% of stones that are dug out of the ground would not be usable.
