CRITERIA: what to look for when buying a star

When examining gems with a star they are best viewed with a single light source otherwise the star becomes blurred and does not appear.

We look for sharpness of the star. This can be defined as, if the rays are thin and definite or wide and fuzzy , straight or wavy, continuous or broken. Thin straight, continuous and sharp is preferred.

The position of the star, whether centrally positioned or off center. Well centered on the can is best.

Then we take into account the cutting and shape of the cab. If the cab is too low the star may be blurred and not sharp. If too high then it may be of center and will not show all the star when viewed from the top. Also if the cab is long and narrow this may note show the star properly.

Colour and transparency are important. The colour should be a nice blue, not light or dark and the more transparent the better.

Apart from the fine rutile needles which cause the star effect it should be free of inclusions and cracks.

Of special note it is extremely rare to find a star ruby or sapphire with both top colour and fine star. In most cases if the colour is good the star is not and vice versa.

When photographing star sapphires and other phenominal gems it is done under artifical light with a neutral background. Photos of gemstones are of the original gem for sale. NO STOCK PHOTOS. Photographing gemstones is extremely difficult in duplicating the exact colour and details.
