what is aquamarine made ofAquamarine is made of a Beryllium, Aluminium Silicate and is part of the Beryl family of minerals. Beryl can be many colors but when it’s blue or blue-green it is called aquamarine.  Aquamarine has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 and it’s crystals look hexagonal in shape. It can form in a perfect six-sided hexagon or in individual prismatic crystals or even short stubby crystals, tabular crystals, and flattened hexagonal plates. It’s an ingenious rock with 2.6 to 2.9 specific gravity. It’s brittle with crystal habits, color, and associated mineral from the environment or granite pegmatites.

What Gives Aquamarine it’s Color

Aquamarine and emeralds are in the same family but are very different. When the mineral Beryl forms in the presence of other minerals it gives different colors:

  • Iron - Will turn the Beryl Blue / Green blue making it Aquamarine
  • Chromium / Vanadium - Green Emerald
  • Manganese - Morganite
  • Manganese  2+ - Red Beryl
  • Iron - Yellow Making it Heliodore or Golden Beryl

Aquamarine is the official birthstone of March. It’s exceptionally hard has a great glass-like luster. The gemstone name aquamarine is an old latin name which is meant seawater.

Aquamarine Formation

When magma under the earth crust interacts with mineral rich rocks called pegmatites. They heat up when they interact with magma which forms the gemstone. Pegamites are rocks that are formed during the final stages of magma crystallisation. Almost all aquamarines are formed in pegmatites.  

Aquamarine can be found in many places around the world where there are mountains. Ranges of locations like Africa, India, South America, Russia, and North America. The quality of aquamarine depends on the color. When the color is richer and deeper it is more valuable. Most have light colored stones and very rare will you find aquamarines with a cat eye effect. The cat eye effect is a line of shimmering lights that’s viewed in different angles and it’s also flawless which is great for rings and pendants.   What Is Aquamarine Made Of

The crystals can be quite large and totally transparent. Aquamarines forms into stunning flawless crystals which can create some beautiful masterpieces. The stones can be heated to a very high temperature so that it can have the beautiful sky blue color. Most gemstones are actually heat treated.

You can use aquamarine as jewelry such as rings, earrings, and bracelets which can be made from the beautiful gemstone. The extremely large gemstone that is too big to be formed as a piece of jewelry are faceted for exclusive collectors. Aquamarine Color 

A dark and deeply saturated blue is the most valuable and most durable of gemstones but still, requires careful handling and care. To avoid scratches you should keep the aquamarine stones away from all the other gemstones. You should clean it with warm soapy water and dry it with tissue or soft cloth. The gemstone is colored by trace amounts of iron and testing of composition, trace elements, and its six-sided crystal structure can easily distinguish it from other blue stones. 

The beautiful gem is made from the mountains and can be greatly valued with the deep blue colors and is pretty hard compared to other gems. It can be worn with great jewelry pieces to shine.
