Amethyst derives from the Greek “amethystos” - which translates as “the non-intoxicated.” That’s because it was believed that the crystal could protect its owner from becoming drunk during a party.

Amethyst-quartz crystals found in the Alps.There are two possible explanations for the name and the supposed medical proprieties of this mineral. 

According to Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder (who was killed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius) the gemstone resembles the color of with water diluted wine, making it no longer intoxicating. According to some historians, cups made from amethyst could have been used to serve water as wine during Roman festivities, so even if they drank all night long, there was no danger of a hangover in the next morning.
