Over a decade ago I purchased this intriguing specimen of covellite from a rock shop in Butte, Montana. Butte, Montana’s copper mines are noted for the very best specimens of Covellite available. This is the absolute best specimen that I have seen, and I have seen many.

Measuring approximately 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches and weighing 197.6 grams (6.9 ounces), approximately two thirds of this large specimen is matrix on which the crystals formed. There is a wealth of the much sought after foliated, bladed crystal formations. Resplendent with its indigo, highly reflective thin blades, this startling earth treasure is simply amazing. Though the crystal plates show the typical lovely indigo and magenta hues at one angle, they display a coppery green as well. Such bladed crystals, while not rare, are exceedingly hard to find especially in an undamaged condition. Too often many specimens of Covellite have suffered damage to the striking blades of magenta, electric green and indigo. This treasure has no damage.I could detect NO damage, scrapes or broken blades. Specimen looks remarkable under magnification, use a hand lens to magnify and appreciate this superb object and examine it close-up carefully and wonder about the intricacy of the blades and their superb fire.Viewed through a hand lens, this forest of platy, sharp bladed iridescence is truly a marvel !
