Here is a nice example of silvery blue Kyanite found in Thasos island. Thasos Kyanite is the finest for the variety in Greece. The locality is hardly known to the mineral world and hardly any of this material from this locality is available on the market which makes it very rare (google search). Kyanite has an alternative name also — disthene. Both of these names have a meaning relating to the properties of the mineral. “Kyanos” means blue in Greek and disthene also from Greek means that its hardness varies. It is considerably weaker along the crystal (5 on Mohs scale) and stronger across it (7 on Mohs scale). The earliest mining on the island has been dated to around 13,000 BC, when paleolithic miners dug a shaft at the site of the modern-era Tzines iron mine.The Trikorfo area represents a unique mineralogical locality with Mn-rich minerals.
