Extremely rare large faceted Scheelite from China. Among the rarest gems of the world, very rarely seen as faceted gem. Valuable collector's stone!

When the Chinese deposit of Scheelite was first discovered, specimens and cutting rough were readily available and at a reasonable price. Now with the deposit exhausted, specimens have sky rocketed in value and rough is almost impossible to find.

Despite its low hardness (limited use in jewelry), scheelite has been faceted as a gemstone for collectors. Its high refractive index and adamantine luster assure bright and surprisingly attractive gemstones. Scheelite is well known for the strong bright blue fluorescence it exhibits under short wave ultra-violet light. It is practically inert under long wave UV.

Yellowish to brownish but sometimes almost orange-yellow in color, the calcium tungstate mineral scheelite is an important ore of tungsten. Scheelite was named for the discoverer of tungsten, K. W. Scheele, the Swedish chemist who proved the existence of tungsten in the mineral.
