Origin and name
The name heliodor comes from the Greek words helios, meaning "sun", and doron, meaning "gift"
It was first discovered in 1910 in Rossing, Namibia
The name was originally used to describe the golden beryl from Namibia, but now refers to all yellow beryls
Properties
Heliodor is brittle and vitreous
It has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale
It's resistant to external influences
Its color comes from trace amounts of iron impurities
Inclusions of iron can also give heliodor a yellow-green tint
