Fire sphene, or titanite, is a rare and highly brilliant gemstone celebrated for its exceptional dispersion—even higher than diamond—giving it an intense, fiery sparkle. Its name “sphene” comes from the Greek sphenos (“wedge”), referring to the common crystal shape.
Color: Typically found in shades of yellow, golden, green, or brown, sometimes with orange or reddish flashes. The most prized stones display a vivid greenish-yellow or golden hue with strong internal fire.
Optical Brilliance: Fire sphene has an unusually high refractive index and dispersion, producing rainbow flashes of color (fire) that surpass those seen in many other gems.
Clarity: Often contains inclusions, but fine transparent stones with high brilliance are extremely desirable.
Cut: Usually faceted to highlight its dispersion, though careful cutting is needed due to its relative softness and brittle nature.
Durability: With a hardness of 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale, sphene is softer than many gems and best suited for pendants, earrings, or occasional-wear rings rather than daily wear.
Sources: Found in Pakistan, Madagascar, Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Russia, with Pakistan producing some of the finest bright green-golden material.
Appeal
Fire sphene is admired for its extraordinary brilliance and rainbow fire, making it one of the most dazzling collector’s gems. Its combination of rarity, optical performance, and rich color ensures it stands out as a gemstone of distinction.
