Afghan Ruby Description
Origin: Primarily mined in the Jagdalek (or Jegdalek) region, about 100 kilometers east of Kabul, Afghanistan. This area has been known for its rubies for centuries, dating back to ancient times.
Color: The most prized Afghan rubies display a deep, vivid red or pigeon blood red hue, sometimes with slight purplish or pinkish undertones. However, color can vary depending on the specific mine and quality.
Clarity: Afghan rubies often contain inclusions, which are natural and common in rubies. Some stones are relatively clean, while others may show silk-like inclusions or tiny rutile needles.
Cut: Due to the region’s limited cutting facilities, many rubies are exported in rough or cabochon form. Locally cut stones may be irregular or asymmetrical, but high-quality stones are often sent abroad for precision faceting.
Size: While larger Afghan rubies exist, most are found in small to medium sizes. Exceptional larger stones are rare and command high prices.
Fluorescence: Like many natural rubies, Afghan rubies can exhibit strong red fluorescence under UV light, which enhances their glow and perceived richness.
Value: Afghan rubies are valued for their natural beauty, but they may be slightly less expensive than Burmese rubies due to less international exposure and branding. Still, fine Afghan rubies can fetch high prices, especially untreated specimens.
Treatments: Many rubies globally are heat-treated to enhance color and clarity. Afghan rubies are sometimes untreated, which increases their value in the gem market.
