Rubellite is a gemstone variety of the mineral tourmaline. It is characterized by its deep reddish-pink to purplish-red color. Rubellite's color is caused by traces of manganese. It is one of the most prized varieties of tourmaline due to its vibrant color and high clarity.
Rubellite is often mistaken for other red gemstones like ruby or red spinel due to its similar color. However, it can be distinguished by its linear striations, which are characteristic of tourmaline crystals. Rubellite is also softer than ruby and spinel, with a hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale.
