• Color

  Madagascar sapphires can be found in a variety of colors, including blue, pink, yellow, green, white, and orange. The orange variety, known as Padparadscha, is the rarest and most expensive.

• Growth zoning

  Madagascar sapphires are known for their complex angular growth zoning, which can create sharp angular structures or an iridescent effect.

• Color zoning

  Madagascar sapphires can have striking color zoning, with thin, deep blue zones surrounded by lighter colored clouds.

• Growth tubes

  Madagascar sapphires often contain growth tubes, which can be small and single or clustered together.

• Deposit

  Madagascar sapphires are found in altered marble and limestone silicates, known as "skarn". A large sapphire deposit was discovered in Madagascar in 1998, which led to a rush of people to the island in search of gemstones.

Heat treatment from lower to higher temperatures can have a significant impact on the color of metamorphic blue sapphires from Madagascar. In our study, temperatures between 800 and 1100°C in air lightened the blue color, while higher temperatures, which can dissolve rutile, created deeper, more saturated blues
