Charoite possesses the most wonderful chatoyance or pearly markings in lay mans’ terms. This is what makes it so glorious and unusual. Charoite is formed from limestone by the process of contact metamorphism. Since this is a relatively common geologic phenomenon it is not completely clear why the finds of this stone are limited, but the particular limestone in that area has unique chemical properties as do the intrusive rocks. So far, gemologists have not been able to ascertain the exact chemical/structural reason for its purple color. Charoite is a silicate of complex composition; one mineralogical source describes it as a hydrated potassium, sodium, calcium, barium, strontium, silicate hydroxyfluoride! Try saying that backwards!!
