Another amazing Charoite cabochon with pods of microline Feldspar - beautiful and rare! Charoite was discovered in the Murun Mountains in Yakutia, Russia.  It was found by Russian geologists the Rogovazs in the late 1950s and called’ lilac stone’. In 1978 the name “Charoite” was confirmed by the Commission on New Mineral Species - named after the Chara River near where it is found.Charoite is formed from limestone by the process of contact metamorphism. Since this is a relatively common geologic phenomenon it is not completely clear why the finds of this stone are limited, but the particular limestone in that area has unique chemical properties as do the intrusive rocks.  So far, gemologists have not been able to ascertain the exact chemical/structural reason for its purple color. Charoite is a silicate of complex composition; one mineralogical source describes it as a hydrated potassium, sodium, calcium, barium, strontium, silicate hydroxyfluoride!  Try saying that backwards!!
