The Democratic Republic of the Congo has now become the most important producer. The richest deposits are found in the mining district of the "Shaba Crescent" in Katanga Province. High quality Malachite is mined mainly by hand in small copper mines abandoned as the copper deposits dried up. Many of the most spectacular specimens of malachite found here contain combinations with other minerals, such as azurite, cuprite, or chrysocolla.

Malachite history:  Perhaps some of the most famous malachite in the world is the Malachite room of the Winter Palace of the Russian Royal family, now part of the Hermitage museum in St Petersburg.  All the columns, the fire place and many ornaments are made of malachite, in some cases they used the "Russian mosaic" technique.  The Russian Tsar Alexander gave Napoleon numerous pieces of malachite furniture and even basins.  These can be seen in an apartment of the Grand Trianon at Versailles. The malachite supply for these gifts came from Russia’s Ural Mountains, but most of it is now used up.
