Zambia is one of the best areas for Emeralds along with Colombia. However, Zambia only started really producing in the 1970’s and are known for their clarity and colour. They are also less brittle than Colombian Emeralds as the evolved from sedimentary rock instead of metamorphic rock. This makes them more desired for jewellery.

The exclusive high end market was very slow to accept Zambian emeralds in the beginning, but that all began to change when Tiffany & Co. began to promote emeralds from Zambia in 1989. This was the turning point where these beautiful stones became more recognised and regarded for their own distinctive characteristics. Zambian emeralds make up around 20% of the global supply and are known as being darker-green, and some even have a bluish tone, especially under incandescent light. But many Zambian emeralds rival the Colombian product for colour.

Their strength – These precious stones rate between a 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness. That puts them just behind a ruby or sapphire’s 9 and a diamond’s 10.

In addition to being the May birthstone, emeralds are also associated with 20th and 35th anniversaries and the first-choice stone for those born under the Cancer star sign.
