· Burma (Myanmar): The gold standard. Burmese rubies are celebrated for their exceptional color—that intense, vibrant "Pigeon's Blood" red with a strong red fluorescence that seems to make them glow from within.

· Mozambique: A relatively new but hugely important source. Mozambique rubies are prized for their excellent clarity and saturated red color, rivaling Burmese stones at a more accessible price point.

· Thailand & Cambodia: Often known for darker, more brownish-red tones, these stones are frequently used in higher-end jewelry and can offer great value.

· Sri Lanka: Typically produce rubies that are lighter in tone, often leaning towards pinkish-red, with a bright, sparkling appearance.

The Enhancement Note

It is standard industry practice to heat-treat rubies to improve their color and clarity. This process is permanent and stable. Over 95% of all rubies on the market are heat-treated. Unheated rubies of fine quality are extremely rare and command a significant premium. A reputable seller will always disclose if a stone has been treated.
