Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of the minerals quartz and moganite. These are both silica minerals, but the difference is that quartz has a trigonal crystal structure, while moganite is monoclinic. Chalcedony's standard formula is SiO2 (silicon dioxide).
Chalcedony became very popular in jewellery in the post art deco period of the 1930’s to the 1960’s. Some beautiful jewellery designs with gem grade blue purple chalcedony, can be seen in museums and exhibitions.
