Peridot is best known for its yellowish green color. Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine. Its chemical composition includes iron and magnesium, and iron is the cause of its attractive yellowish green colors. The gem often occurs in volcanic rocks called basalts, which are rich in these two elements. The yellow-green peridot is called the extreme gem as its found in lava, meteorites, and deep in the earth’s mantle. The modern August birthstone, peridot has been prized as a jewelry stone since ancient times. Always green in color but with considerable variations, a peridot's particular shade depends on its source.
