Lapis lazuli has been mined in Afghanistan for over 6,000 years. It has also been mined in Chile but it can be found in several countries including Burma, India, Angola, Siberia, USA and Pakistan. Each stone has a color like no other in a combination of blue, black and gold.
In ancient times it was used to make dyes. The color was used in many religious clothings of high priests or ruling members in ancient Egypt who traded valuable items for this dye. Ancients also used it as a seal, jewelry, gemstone beads, beautiful mosaic tiles, amulets, vases, and it was considered as the sapphire of the ancients.
It is a semi precious stone known for its intense blue color. There are not many other blue stones that can rival the intensity of good Lapis. The most sought after type is the intense blue with a light dusting of little flecks of golden pyrite. Gemstones with no white calcite veins and only small pyrite inclusions are even more prized and make ideal beads for necklaces.
Here on Gem Rock Auctions we created multiple categories to make navigation easier. If you are looking for single cabochon stones then you can look unber Cabochons. There is also a category for pairs and parcels of stones. The pairs category has some beautiful matched pairs that can be used for earrings or accent stones.
If you fancy cutting your own stone there is a category for rough material. In there you will find chunks of stone that can used to cut your very own Cabochon.
Lastly there is the specimens and the carvings. Specimens are best left the way they are as they show how the raw rock was formed. These pieces are generally either too low quality to be cut or they show how the rock has formed. Carvings is an interesting category because it has some items carved by master craftsmen.
