Schalenblende is a botryoidal aggregate composed primarily of Sphalerite and Wurtzite found in zinc rich hydrothermal veins and as concretions in sedimentary rock. Sphalerite is a zinc iron sulphide mineral and a major ore of zinc. Wurtzite is a zinc iron sulphide and a minor ore of zinc. Schalenblende may also contain quantities of Pyrite and Galena. Schalenblende is also known as Banded Blende.

Specimens of Schalenblende are often cut and polished to display the equistite contentric coloured bands of cream, brown and silver. But they are very rarely found cut in cabochon of this supreme beauty and quality.
