8.01ct unheated padparadscha sapphire from Sri Lanka.
This orangey pink sapphire is truly the color of lotus; the ‘padparadscha’ is the Sinhalese name for the lotus.
Padparadscha sapphires must display two colors, pink and orange, and no trace of brown.
Traditionally, padparadscha sapphires must be pastel, pale even, so it is not just a specific color but also a specific lightness that makes a pad a pad.
These specifics and their lack of understanding mean many sapphires are sold as padparadschas, but for us it is not confusing at all, because it really is rare.
Your eyes will tell you what you love after you look at enough photos; alternatively, just question, ‘does it look like the lotus?’
This padparadscha is pastel and bright, with some parts more pink and others orangey pink.
When light dims, the pink intensifies. This color effect is like a gradual sobering of the lotus in its short bloom (we have a lotus in the pond at our studio).
Photos show the brightness of the padparadscha when there is plenty of light, and then most pink when there is low light.
All photos are taken in natural light.
The stone measures 13.17 x 10.79 x 5.84 mm.
