Clarity grading for colored gems is complex.
Grading (Unlike Diamonds, the importance of VS vs VVS vs IF is not necessary. Color is far more important for colored gemstone)1) Eye Clean 2) Slightly Included 3) Moderately Included 4) Heavily Included 5) Severely Included
Now is when it gets complicated. Colored gems are broke into 3 categories.
Type 1: These are gems that grow extremely clean in nature and usually have no eye-visible inclusions. An example is Aquamarine.
Type 2: These are gems that typically grow with some minor inclusions in nature and the inclusions may be eye-visible. An example is ruby.
Type 3: These are gems that typically grow with many inclusions in nature and the inclusions are usually eye-visible. An example is emerald.
Now, for each TYPE of gemstone, the clarity grading means different things. The only clarity grade that is the same across all gems is the Eye Clean (The stone appears clean to the unaided eye. NOTHING AT ALL IS VISIBLE)
Lets take Ruby and Emerald for examples. A Slightly included Ruby is defined as: Minor inclusions somewhat easy to see with the unaided eye.
However a slightly included Emerald is defined as: Noticeable inclusions apparent to the unaided eye.
