Sphene, also known as Titanite, is a gemstone that is prized for its vibrant color and remarkable brilliance. It is typically found in shades of green, yellow, brown, or even colorless, though greenish-yellow is the most common. The gemstone's high dispersion (the ability to split light into its spectral colors) gives it a fiery brilliance, often compared to that of diamonds.

Sphene has a relatively high refractive index, which contributes to its sparkle, but it also makes the stone quite soft (5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness). This softness makes it more prone to scratching and breakage, so it is often used in jewelry with care.

The mineral itself is a silicate of titanium, calcium, and aluminum. Sphene's crystal structure is monoclinic, and it often forms in prism-like shapes. Because of its stunning optical properties, sphene is sometimes used in fine jewelry, although its fragility can limit its practical applications.
