GILALITE QUARTZ
TREATMENT-NONE
GILALITE QUARTZ
ALSO KNOWN AS
"MEDUSA QUARTZ AND PARAIBA QUARTZ"
is also known as and sometimes sold as Paraiba quartz because the small deposit was found in the Paraiba state of Brazil.
This new type of included quartz gemstone was discovered in August 2004 in Brazil. It is very rare and in very limited supply.
Contains rare copper mineral Gilalite (Cu5Si6O17·7H2O) Called Bolinas (small balls) or Medusa Quartz (Jellyfish) that shows small globular aggregates of fibrous crystals. The name is due to the shape of the aggregates remembering Jellyfish.
GIA has an article in Gems & Gemmology, called “Medusa Quartz” with gilalite inclusions in the Fall 2005, Volume 41, issue 3.
Under magnification, some resemble the shape of a floating jellyfish named medusas rondeau. Thus the name Medusa quartz. This is 100% natural from the earth and identification of the inclusions were performed by the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
