Hongshan Culture Background
Time Period: Neolithic, ca. 4700–2900 BCE
Region: Northeastern China (Liaoning, Inner Mongolia)
Materials: Primarily nephrite jade, with green, white, brown, and sometimes yellow nephrite used.
Iconography: Common motifs include dragons (C-shaped "pig dragons"), birds, masks, and some animals.
Pig Representations
"Pig Dragon" (Zhūlóng/猪龙): These are iconic curled figures that combine pig-like snouts and dragon forms—not literal pigs, but symbolic hybrids.
A literal pig carving (realistic, not stylized or abstracted) is uncommon in authentic Hongshan material. If it's a realistic pig depiction, it may:
Be later in date (possibly Shang, Han, or even modern in style).
Be misidentified or modern-made in Hongshan style.
Yellow Nephrite
Uncommon in Hongshan artifacts, but does exist.
Yellow color may come from iron oxidation or weathering over millennia.
Because most Hongshan jade is green to brownish, a yellow nephrite carving would be rarer and might increase interest or value—if authenticated.
