Tanzanite is a relatively recent discovery but has quickly gained popularity due to its rich blues, violets and purples. Tanzanite was introduced to the world in the late 1960s by Tiffany & Co after local miners thought they were mining sapphires.

Originally called blue zoisite, it was changed before the launch to Tanzanite due to Tanzania being the only place in the world this gem is found.

Tanzanite was formed by huge plate-tectonic activity around 585 million years ago, in the area that would later become Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is only found in a very small and protected mining area in Tanzania.

Tanzanite has strong trichroism, meaning it shows three colours (blue, violet and burgundy) depending on the viewing angle.
