Calcite veins are fractures in rock that have been filled with the mineral calcite. This can occur through various geological processes, such as the movement of fluids carrying dissolved minerals through fractures in the rock.
In the case of dinosaur bones, especially those found in regions with rich geological history like Drumheller, it's possible for calcite-rich fluids to infiltrate the surrounding sediment, including the bones themselves. Over millions of years, the calcite can precipitate out of the fluids and form vein-like structures within the bone or in the surrounding rock matrix.
This phenomenon can provide valuable information to paleontologists about the geological history and processes that occurred in the area after the dinosaur's death, and it can also affect the preservation and structural integrity of the fossil. The age of these fossils, as mentioned previously, is approximately 75-77 million years old, placing them in the Late Cretaceous period, specifically in the Campanian stage.
