Tourmalines are extremely hard gemstones and cannot be scratched easily. So, if a stone has scratches on it, it cannot be a tourmaline. However, tourmalines area rarely free form inclusions. Hence, if your stone looks crystal clear, it probably isn't a tourmaline
Tourmaline is found in pegmatite supplies, magma that is almost fully crystallized. It is known to boast many colors, including green, blue, violet, and even pink. Red tourmalines are known as rubellites and were often misidentified as rubies. Similarly, green tourmalines were confused for emeralds.
The most expensive variety of Tourmaline – the beautiful, rare Paraiba Tourmaline can fetch $10,000 per carat and upwards depending on size and color saturation whilst smaller yellows may only command $50 per carat. The spectrum of prices is as wide as the color range in this amazing gem type.
Basically, the green tourmaline or verdelite category includes any shade of green. However, chrome tourmalines differ chemically from their green cousins. Traces of chromium produce its emerald-like color. For this reason, chrome tourmalines are usually distinguished from other green varieties of tourmaline.
Although buyers covet all these colors, blue and violet have the most appeal. The gem's unique, vivid coloring sets it apart from other tourmalines. Even prized rubellite reds and chrome greens do not reach the prices commanded by fine Paraiba.
Chrome tourmaline gems offer hues that are more saturated than most green tourmalines. Chrome tourmaline can be a lower-priced alternative to tsavorite or emerald. Both these gems are rare in sizes above two carats, but it's not hard to find chrome tourmaline in sizes up to five carats.
