Amethyst geodes are sourced in south America mostly in Brazil and Uruguayan. They are also found in thousands of locations around the world including Australia. Amethyst Geodes are formed in volcanic areas and are a variety of quartz crystal.
Scientists are still not 100% sure how these Amethyst geodes are formed as it is bedrock on the outside and stunning quartz crystals inside so you have to consider how the cavity was formed in these geodes. These cavities are actually filled up with silica rich liquids containing traces iron that give the purple colours that amethyst geodes are know for.
In 2011, MyGems owner (Wayne) went to Brazil in search for a healing stone. Through a mining tour of Brazil Wayne found exactly what he was looking for, a massive 1.04 tonne amethyst geode. He quickly shipped this beautifully large mystical piece to the MyGems shop on the Gold Coast.

These small geodes are around hand size and best way to check is to hit blunt chisel to crack open the geode to see if any crystal formation inside.
It is very time consuming to hitting the geode as can take up to 20 hits with 1lb hammer to crack open .Over half are solid and some are chalcedony so its good to find amethyst crystals
