Ammolites are about 70 to 75 million years old.
They are made from the fossilized shells of ammonites—extinct marine mollusks—that lived during the Late Cretaceous period. These ammonites died out around the same time as the dinosaurs, about 66 million years ago, during the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction event.
Ammolite, the gemstone, forms primarily from ammonites found in the Bearpaw Formation in southern Alberta, Canada. Over millions of years, the shell material mineralized into the colorful, iridescent gemstone known as ammolite.
