Bryozoan fossils are very old, dating back to the Ordovician period, which began about 485 million years ago. Some evidence suggests they may have first appeared in the Cambrian period, possibly over 500 million years ago, but they became especially abundant and diverse in the Ordovician.
These colonial marine animals have left behind extensive fossil records, particularly as calcareous skeletons that preserve well in sedimentary rock.
