Origin & Formation
Zambian emeralds hail primarily from the Kafubu region in Zambia’s Copperbelt, especially mined at the Kagem, Grizzly, Chantete, and Kamakanga sites.
These gems formed through the interplay of chromium‐rich metabasite and beryllium-bearing pegmatite under ancient geological processes 500 million to over 1.5 billion years ago.
Kagem Mine is among the world’s largest emerald operations, supplying roughly 25–30% of global gem-quality emeralds.
Color, Clarity & Durability
Color: Zambian emeralds typically display a deep, vivid green with a bluish undertone. This distinctive hue comes from chromium and vanadium, along with higher iron content than many other emerald sources.
Clarity: These stones often have superior clarity—fewer visible inclusions compared to Colombian emeralds—and may showcase unique internal patterns or “jardin” that add character.
Hardness & Structure: Thanks to their iron-rich composition, Zambian emeralds are slightly harder and more resilient—often falling between 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale—making them less brittle and more durable than many counterparts.
Size & Notable Discoveries
Zambia produces emeralds across all sizes—from modest gems to massive, museum-worthy specimens. Notable finds include the 633‐ct rough crystal (1974), the 539‐ct “Insofu” (2006), over 9,000 cts in Chantete (2010), and the 7,525‐ct “Chipembele” (2021).
These stones are geologically older and often structurally sound owing to their formation history.
Ethical & Sustainable Mining
Zambian emerald mining, especially at Gemfields-operated Kagem, emphasizes sustainable practice, community development, and environmental rehabilitation. Post-mining efforts include tree planting and habitat restoration.
Value & Market Appeal
Zambian emeralds offer a compelling mix of exceptional color and clarity—often at a more accessible price point than those from Colombia.
Pricing varies widely: smaller, commercial-quality stones may start at a few hundred dollars per carat, while premium examples can reach $5,000–$30,000 per carat, depending on the four Cs (color, clarity, cut, carat).
Their consistent beauty and authenticity have earned them growing recognition in international markets.
In Summary
Zambian emeralds are prized for:
Deep, vibrant bluish-green tones
Superior clarity and resilience
Large, high-quality stones—some world-famous
Ethical mining practices
Strong value proposition in the global gemstone market
