Dinosaur bones found in Alberta, Canada, are typically from the Late Cretaceous period, which lasted from about 100.5 to 66 million years ago. This means that most of the dinosaur fossils found in Alberta are roughly between 66 and 100 million years old. Alberta's badlands, especially areas like Dinosaur Provincial Park and the Drumheller Valley, have been rich sources of these fossils, providing significant insights into the dinosaurs that roamed that region during that time.
Agatized fossils occur when the original organic material of a fossil is replaced by agate, a form of microcrystalline quartz.
In Drumheller, among the Badlands' diverse fossil discoveries, there have been instances of clam fossils being replaced by agate. The process of agatization occurs when minerals, often silica-rich solutions, slowly replace the organic material of the clam shell over millions of years. This replacement preserves the original shape and structure of the clam but in the form of agate.
The resulting agatized clam fossils can display beautiful colors and patterns, typical of agate formations, while retaining the intricate details of the clam shell. These specimens are highly sought after by collectors due to their rarity and aesthetic appeal.
